In the wake of the devastating earthquake that struck Cebu in September 2025, followed closely by a powerful typhoon the next month, many communities were left struggling to recover. Schools, in particular, faced significant challenges, not only in restoring damaged facilities but also in ensuring the safety and well-being of their students amid disrupted learning environments.
Amid these difficulties, the spirit of service and solidarity shone brightly. The Rotaract community across the district mobilized efforts to extend help where it was most needed. One such act of compassion came from the Rotaract Club of Omiya Minami in Japan, led by Ogawa, who reached out with a sincere desire to support the people of Cebu during this critical time.
Understanding the urgent needs on the ground, the district worked hand in hand with its partners to identify meaningful and sustainable ways to help. While a portion of the support was directed to assist other affected areas such as Iligan in their relief efforts, a significant focus was placed on rehabilitation—particularly in creating safer and healthier spaces for children to learn.
This shared vision led to the construction of four handwashing facilities at Borromeo Brothers Elementary School. More than just physical structures, these facilities stand as symbols of care, resilience, and the importance of public health, especially in times when proper hygiene can make a crucial difference in preventing disease and safeguarding young lives.
On May 4, 2026, the newly constructed handwashing areas were officially turned over to the school. The event marked not just the completion of a project, but the beginning of a renewed commitment to student health and dignity. With accessible and functional handwashing stations, learners are now better equipped to practice proper hygiene daily, fostering habits that extend beyond the classroom.
This initiative is a testament to what can be achieved when communities come together across borders, united by a common purpose. From Japan to Cebu, and through the collective efforts of dedicated Rotaractors, hope was transformed into action, and action into lasting impact.
As the students of Borromeo Brothers Elementary School use these facilities each day, they are reminded that even in the face of adversity, there are people near and far who care deeply about their future.
